Prof Louis Tong graduated in 1993 with basic medical degree from the National University of Singapore, registered as a medical practitioner in 1994 and achieved accreditation as an ophthalmologist by the Singapore Medical Council in November 2004. He completed training in ophthalmology at various centers in the United Kingdom (1996-2000) and in Singapore (2000-2004). He completed a 2 year overseas cornea research fellowship at the Ocular Surface Center, Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, as part of A*STAR national science scholarship, and a PhD from NUS.

Prof Tong is senior consultant at the Corneal and External Eye Disease Service of  Singapore National Eye Center (SNEC), holds a tenured position at the eye-academic clinical program in the Duke-NUS graduate medical school. He is currently head of ocular surface research group at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). He is vice president of Asia Dry Eye Society, involved in advisory board meetings in several pharmaceutical companies, is a subcommittee member of TFOS international dry eye workshop II, international meibomian gland workshop and a co-inventor in a few patents.

Prof Tong is editorial board member of the Ocular Surface journal, Acta Ophthalmologica, and Current Eye Research, and has been awarded three times the senior investigator Clinician Scientist Award from National Medical Research Council, and published widely including the Singapore Dry Eye Disease framework and APACRS Management of the Ocular Surface for Cataract Surgery.  He runs a dedicated dry eye service at the SNEC, focusing on tear dysfunction and outpatient procedures for Meibomian gland disease, as well as a general eye clinic focusing on cataract surgery. He is actively involved in training and education of nurses, residents, medical students, and fellows, and spearheaded the inaugural online basic ocular and visual science course, and mentored five laboratory science PhD students who had graduated.
